Welcome

Welcome to the official website of Whiston Parish Church. Situated in the heart of the community, St Mary Magdalene is the parish church serving Whiston Village and the surrounding areas.

The church is now open again for public worship services and funerals. For the next few weeks there will be a spoken Eucharist service on a Sunday at 9.45am, with doors open from 9.15am. The services will be led by one of our two Oversight Ministers, either Revd Karen Skidmore or Revd Toby Gibbons.

If you or anyone in your household is showing symptoms of COVID-19, please do not come to church because of the risk that you pose to others; but remain at home and self-isolate.

These services will be very different from how we worshipped before COVID-19 and so we have drawn up a set of guidelines with the aim of keeping everyone as safe as possible during worship. These guidelines can be found in the section below this article; or on the church Facebook page; and they are available as you enter church. The guidelines are updated whenever the Government issues new guidance.

We hope to resume our previous pattern of worship later in the year as the situation improves, but in the meantime we look forward to welcoming you safely at Whiston Parish Church on a Sunday morning.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength . . . Love your neighbour as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31)

PCC Statement: COVID Procedures from 19th July 2021 onwards

The Parochial Church Council met on 13th July 2021 and decided that, in view of the rising number of cases of Covid-19, the current measures for services at Whiston Parish Church will remain in place until September 2021. This means that masks have to be worn, hand sanitizer used, track and trace complied with; and social distancing maintained. We understand that some people may be disappointed but our priority, is to keep everyone as safe as possible

Today we celebrate Harvest and all the good gifts which our Lord has bestowed on us. We do so because, despite the difficulties of the lockdown earlier in the year and shortages then and now, we have enough to eat. We acknowledge that not all our brothers and sisters are able to feed themselves, but food is there if we want to share it. This harvest we are asking you to support the work of the Lighthouse in Rotherham and the work of Farm Africa. Our money shared between them will bring meaningful support to both organisations and will be an expression of our own thankfulness to God for all that we have received from him.

We begin our worship by saying the Harvest Collect:
Creator God, you made the goodness of the land,
the riches of the sea and the rhythm of the seasons;
as we thank you for the harvest,
may we cherish and respect
this planet and its peoples,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

We read today’s gospel   -   Matthew 6:25-23

We sing the great harvest hymn – We Plough the Fields and Scatter

1) We plough the fields and scatter
the good seed on the land,
but it is fed and watered
by God's almighty hand;
he sends the snow in winter,
the warmth to swell the grain,
the breezes and the sunshine
and soft refreshing rain.
All good gifts around us
are sent from heaven above,
then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord
for all his love.

2) He only is the maker
of all things near and far;
he paints the wayside flower,
he lights the evening star;
the wind and waves obey him,
by him the birds are fed;
much more to us his children,
he gives our daily bread.
All good gifts...

3) We thank you, then, O Father,
for all things bright and good,
the seed-time and the harvest,
our life, our health, our food:
accept the gifts we offer
for all your love imparts;
and what thou most desirest,
our humble, thankful hearts.
All good gifts...

We pray:

Eternal God, you crown the year with your
goodness and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season:
Grant that we may use them to your glory,
for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Wednesday Eucharist

Our Wednesday morning communion service restarted this last week and it was a great joy to gather once again midweek at the Lord’s table. At the moment there are no refreshments but the lovely late autumn sunshine enabled those present to meet afterwards outside church and to share news of each other. The Rev. Sue Davies presided and introduced the congregation to the Rev. Louise Castle who will be licensed to the Mission Area later this month.
